I'm a geology student and I read this as I became more interested in soil science. I read the whole thing in one evening. Couldn't put down my Kindle. The HOA horror stories solidified my already in place plans to never live in an area that has them. The house I grew up in didn't, and although my parents still insist on spraying the sides of the house with insecticide, the rest of our acre yard is about 50% weeds. mostly clover, dandelion and plantain and I love that. The plantain makes a great salve for treating insect bites and is great in salad and so are the dandelions. High biodiversity with lots of insects and rich soil.This book will serve as a guide for me when I graduate and buy a house. Being a geologist I am pretty sure I won't need to hire anyone to have diverse soil and a diverse ecosystem- I know how to do all that. Just let nature grow.My best friend is a budding landscaper who is starting his own business out of high school. I've been telling him for a while to offer organic solutions and not spray Agent Orange on his yard, and I think I have him convinced.I've now become very interested in permaculture- this book has inspired me. Like I said, my future home will be designed geologically perfect... with erosion control, perfect water drainage and probably a small pond to breed dragonflies for biological pest control. And my lawn will be a bees paradise- complete with dandelions, clovers, plantains, and other weeds that I love eating. I love making those weeds into chips- olive oil, sea salt and 12 minutes in the oven and the hated weeds become a delicious snack.After reading this book, I am starting a dandelion herb garden in my dorm window. I picked a puffball from a curb and bought a pot, and organic dirt from Amazon. I intend to do small-scale composing in my dorm, like burying dropped food into the dirt, probably mostly organic raisins.Overall, this book was amazing. Well researched, and well written. Highly recommended for people who like soil, plants and the environment, geology students, gardeners, lawn-care people wanting to do more to save the planet, and even the people who spay their yard with Agent Orange to make it an artificial representation of nature where every tree and hedge is perfectly square, useless grass is grown, and to top it off they put a plastic pink flamingo in their non-native chemical laden "garden". If they want their springs to stop being silent, they should read this book also.(Sorry for the rant, I get passionate about this stuff) Highly recommended! Great book! Phil does it again. I haven't read one book by this author that I haven't thought was excellent and thought provoking and this one doesn't disappoint.I know absolutely nothing about lawn and landscape care, about pesticides, about plants, and gardening, in fact, I've killed several cacti in my life. All of my friends would leave their kids or pets with me as they know I would take care of them and protect them as if they were my own, but not one friend or family member would leave me to water or care for their plants. I'd end up killing them. For real.My HOA is very strict about aesthetics to the point that we have a special committee running it that patrols the neighborhood looking for infractions. I understand the want, the need, to have residents understand that they can't paint their houses purple or black or pepto-pink, but I think they go a little far with how controlling they are about every aspect of our yards. They even gave me a notice because I had an invisible dog fence put in without getting pre-approval which, apparently, they wouldn't have approved. Did anyone catch that it's an invisible fence? They turned another resident down before we moved into the neighborhood a few years ago. We like our dog Buddy to have the freedom to roam our yard at his leisure and putting up an actual fence we knew for sure was not an option as they are verboten (forbidden in German).Anyhow, Phil points out lots of interesting things, things I never even thought about. I can tell you that I think that my lawn company mowing my lawn every single Thursday for the majority of the year is not necessary. It's the equivalent of a man getting a haircut every other week. You can do it, but it's totally unnecessary. I think I'll have to talk to my landscape company.Now I don't have the properly that Phil has where he can have a permaculture farm and I do have an HOA and if I want to live here in relative peace, I have to pick my battles, but there are things I can do and I will look into implementing what I can.Read the book, you'll learn a lot.If you want to read thought provoking, interesting fiction books and one other non-fiction book, read Phil's other books. He's a very insightful, interesting and intelligent guy and it shows in his writing. Check out his author page and get started on one of his books. You'll be glad you did.Enjoy!
